National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to eligible people with disability to gain more time with family and friends, greater independence, access to new skills, jobs, or volunteering in their community, and an improved quality of life. The NDIS also connects anyone with disability to services in their community.
To be eligible for NDIS, you must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen who holds a Protected Special Category Visa. You must also have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to perform everyday tasks and requires support.
You can apply for NDIS by completing an Access Request Form, which can be found on the NDIS website or obtained from a local NDIS office. You will need to provide information about your disability, your support needs, and any relevant medical or other reports.
The support you can receive from NDIS depends on your individual needs and goals. It may include funding for assistive technology, personal care, transport, therapy, and other services that help you live an ordinary life.
NDIS is funded by the Australian government. It is paid for through a combination of general taxation revenue and a special levy on some taxpayers.
Yes, NDIS allows you to choose your own service providers, as long as they are registered with NDIS and meet certain quality and safety standards.
Your NDIS plan is usually reviewed once a year, or more often if there are significant changes in your circumstances or support needs
If you’re not happy with your NDIS plan, you can request a review or appeal the decision. You can also get help from an advocacy service or support worker.
You can find more information about NDIS on the official NDIS website, or by contacting the NDIS Contact Centre on 1800 800 110.
